Dr. Sawyer’s curriculum vitae is outstanding, and she comes highly recommended from other equine veterinarians that have worked with her. Dr. Sawyer is excited to meet the clients and patients over the next few weeks as she is working alongside Dr. Kellerman.
Dr. Sawyer grew up in the Kansas City area and completed her veterinary degree at the University of Missouri. During veterinary school, Dr. Sawyer externed at large referral practices in Lexington, Kentucky, including: Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, and Woodford Equine Hospital. Dr. Sawyer also completed externships at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital and Equine Medical Center of Ocala in Ocala, Florida.
Dr. Sawyer completed a rigorous and highly sought after ambulatory internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in the heart of horse country in Lexington, Kentucky. She worked mainly on Thoroughbreds and American Saddlebreds, focusing on reproduction, herd health, emergency medicine and sales work. She had close mentorship from two partners: Dr. Jeff Cook, who specializes in reproduction and herd health, and Dr. Scott Pierce, a partner with Rood and Riddle for over 20 years who specializes in sales work including upper airway endoscopy, conformation, and pre-purchase exams. During her internship, she took over 300 survey radiographs for thoroughbred sales held at Keeneland Racecourse and Fasig Tipton.
After her internship, Dr. Sawyer worked as a resident veterinarian at Hanover Shoe Farms, a world-renowned Standardbred breeding farm with over 1200 horses, in Hanover, Pennsylvania. The opportunity to move closer to family beckoned Dr. Sawyer back to the Kansas City area to become the solo resident veterinarian and broodmare manager at Rodrock Ranches, a large quarter horse breeding ranch. She established an embryo flushing program at the ranch with the mentorship of Dr. Rob Foss, and became Ranch Manager of the 650 acre facility.
